We pull up to Erin’s house by eleven-thirty. She’s sore, that much I can tell with how she sat gingerly in the car. But she’s also on cloud nine, going by the serene, freshly fucked look on her face.

My pride swells knowing I had something to do with her current state of mind.

We enter the house, and my chest warms with the smells of this place. I’m not ready to scare her by saying it smells like home to me, but it does.

Erin immediately starts checking out the work Glitch and I did in the backyard. “Wow.” She steps out onto her back patio. “This looks like a whole different property.”

All we did was clean up the toys and bike ramps and collapsed the trampoline. Mowed and moved furniture around. The caterers came in to set up the rollout fabric that covers the mini dirt track and set folding chairs up.

“That arch is perfect,” I say, placing my hand on the small of her back.

She leans into me and sighs. “My dad built it for my mom. She had twinkle lights on it over there,” she points at a different part of the yard. “But I moved it here and planted Clemantis on it. It’ll look even cooler when they’re in full bloom.”

“Stunning,” I’m not talking about the flower. “What’s over there?”

“Roses and wisteria. Over there are day lilies. The tulips are done, but my Lucifer plants are popping up. They’ve done well out here.”

My gorgeous girl loves to garden, and her landscaping is phenomenal. “It’s amazing.” Like you. “Smells good too.” Like you.

She looks up at me with a content smile. “Gardening’s my happy place.”

And you’re mine.

The sound of a deep engine rumbles to a slow stop. Erin immediately shoves away from me. “Beetle’s home!” She runs into the house and stands in the front doorway to greet him.

I come up right behind her, and watch Brendan hop off the bus. He hoists a book bag nearly as big as he is onto his shoulder and his brow digs down while he walks along the sidewalk. Then he sees my car in the driveway. My heart clatters because I’m not sure what I should expect, but it’s not the reaction Beetle gives.

A smile tears across his face as he runs across the lawn. “Is Trey here?”

Damn does my heart swell hearing the excitement in his voice.

“Yes!” Erin laughs, like his enthusiasm about me visiting is totally normal.

Beetle breezes into the house and shoves right past his mother to see me. Happiness lights his face when he drops his bag and yells, “TREY!”

“What’s up, little man?” We do our secret handshake that I taught him last time I came to visit. I catch the look on Erin’s face—it’s warm and loving and it tears me up inside.

Our eyes meet, and she shakes off the emotion and puts her hands on her hips. “Hey!” Erin fusses. “What am I? Chopped liver? Seriously, kid, I give you life, and you just blow
